Safety
Safety
Safety is our Number 1 priority.
Rugby players don't wear pads or helmets, therefore techniques and rules of the sport make impact much safer. Rugby players are taught to use their arms and shoulders when making contact with opponents; earning serious repercussions for any contact above the shoulders and other dangerous styles of play. Players caught disregarding these rules receive a yellow card and are forced to sit on the bench for ten minutes in rugby fifteens and two minutes in rugby sevens. Serious offenses can result in a red card, with the chance of suspending the athlete for weeks.
Though rare, serious bumps and knocks can happen, and that is why it is important to have a Concussion Action Plan in place, and access to the following resources - there to ensure that correct protocols are adhered to if you, or the coaching staff, suspect a concussion may have occurred.
Concussion Action Plan
Remove the athlete from play.
Ensure that the athlete is evaluated by a health care professional experienced in evaluating for concussion. Do not try to judge the seriousness of the injury yourself.
Inform the athlete’s parents or guardians about the possible concussion and give them the fact sheet on concussion.
Inform the CCHS Athletic Trainer
Keep the athlete out of play the day of the injury. An athlete will only return to play with permission from a health care professional, who is experienced in evaluating for concussion, and the CCHS Athletic Trainer (Patty Vasiliades) .
